Host David Naimon talks with Jess Walter about his sixth novel, Beautiful Ruins, a deeply human, roller coaster of a novel, spanning fifty years and nearly as many lives. “…a blockbuster, with romance, majesty, comedy, smarts, and a cast of thousands. There’s lights, there’s camera, there’s action. If you want anything more from a novel than Jess Walter gives you in Beautiful Ruins, you’re getting thrown out of the theater.” (Daniel Handler, author of Why We Broke Up and creator of Lemony Snicket )
Walter is also the author of the national bestseller The Financial Lives of the Poets, the National Book Award finalist The Zero, the Edgar Award-winning Citizen Vince, Land of the Blind, and the New York Times Notable Book Over Tumbled Graves. He lives in Spokane, Washington, with his family.

David,
I just listened to your amazing interview with Jess Walters. Toward the end of the interview, Jess mentioned several authors who influenced him. I’m aware of Calvino and Barthes, but couldn’t understand the pronunciation of the other two author’s names. The names sounded like Barthomy and Borheas. If you know the author’s names, will you kindly send them to me. I am a writer and would love to read the works of these authors that Jess Walters recommended.
Thanks so much and I really appreciate the depth and insight of your interviews.
It’s so refreshing to hear intelligent, creative, and strategic questions. You do more than go “Between the Covers.” You throw off the covers!
